Frequently asked questions

Honest answers to the questions people most often ask about custom silicone finger prostheses. For anything specific to your situation, a registered clinician can advise properly.

Getting started

A custom silicone finger prosthesis is for anyone who has lost a finger, or part of one, through injury, surgery or a medical condition, or who was born with a finger difference, and who would like to restore the natural appearance of their hand. Whether it suits you specifically is something a registered clinician assesses in person.

Yes. There is no time limit. Many people come to a prosthesis years after their finger loss, once they decide they want to restore the appearance of their hand. As long as the area has healed, the timing is entirely up to you.

No. A custom finger prosthesis is fitted by a registered clinician, not sold direct to the public. BioDigit makes the device and supplies trained, registered clinicians; you work with one of them, who assesses, measures, colour-matches and fits it.

Register your interest and we'll connect you with a registered clinician who provides this service. If there isn't one in your area yet, we'll keep you informed as the network grows.

What it's like

In everyday light and normal situations, a high-quality custom prosthesis is very difficult to distinguish from a natural finger, and most people simply won't notice. Under very close inspection or harsh direct light it may be detectable. The aim is a natural appearance in everyday life, not invisibility under a microscope.

Fitting a silicone finger prosthesis is not a surgical procedure, it is a custom-made device that fits over or onto your residual finger. Taking an impression and fitting are not painful. If you have any sensitivity in the residual finger, tell your clinician, who will take care with it.

Medical-grade silicone is soft and skin-like, and a well-fitted prosthesis is designed to be comfortable for everyday wear. As with anything new, there's a short period of getting used to it. Your clinician will check the fit is comfortable and show you how to wear it.

Yes. These prostheses are made for everyday life, normal activities, hand washing and work are generally fine. Your clinician will give guidance specific to your device and routine. For care details, see our care guide.

Realism & function

A well-made, custom-matched silicone finger can be remarkably convincing. Realism comes from layered colour matching (skin tone, undertone, freckles, joint colour), nail detail, surface texture, correct proportion, and a clean transition edge, all fitted by a trained clinician.

A finger prosthesis primarily restores appearance, and can offer light function (such as helping to stabilise objects) and protect a sensitive residual finger. It does not restore the full movement, strength and sensation of a natural finger. A clinician will be honest about what's realistic for you.

A great deal. The inexpensive covers online are generic, one-size silicone products in a few standard shades. A BioDigit prosthesis is individually sculpted to your finger and colour-matched to your own skin and nail, then fitted by a registered clinician. They are entirely different products.

Cost & funding

The cost varies, because each prosthesis is custom-made and fitted to an individual. It depends on how much of the finger is missing, the colour-match complexity, retention, the clinician's fitting work and your location. A registered clinician can give an accurate figure for your situation.

Payment arrangements are handled with the clinician who provides your care. Depending on where you live and how you lost the finger, funding routes such as insurance or workplace injury schemes may help, see our costs and funding guide, and ask your clinician.

It may, depending on your policy, country and how the loss occurred. Insurance, workplace injury schemes and some public health systems can contribute in certain circumstances. A clinician experienced in these devices can advise on realistic routes where you live.

Process & care

It depends on the clinician's process and the manufacturing window, which your clinician will explain. Typically it involves a consultation and assessment, an impression and colour-match appointment, and a fitting, with aftercare follow-up. BioDigit provides a clear delivery window so you know what to expect.

With good care, a quality silicone finger lasts a considerable time, though colour and finish gradually change with everyday wear and sun exposure, which is normal. Your clinician can advise what to expect and when a replacement may be worthwhile. See our care guide for how to look after it.

Gentle regular cleaning with mild soap and lukewarm water, proper drying, sensible storage away from heat and sunlight, and avoiding harsh chemicals. Our interactive care guide walks through daily care, cleaning, wearing, storage and when to contact your clinician.

Your clinician inspects and accepts every device before you see it, and if it doesn't meet the standard it's remade or refunded by published rule. If anything changes after fitting, the fit, the look, or you have any concern, contact your clinician.

Trust & safety

Only a registered clinician, a hand therapist, occupational therapist or other suitably registered professional, whose professional registration is verified, and who has completed BioDigit's product training. Your care stays with a qualified clinician throughout.

No. BioDigit is the maker and supplier behind your clinician. We provide a quality-assured device and the method to fit it well; your registered clinician provides the assessment, judgement, fitting and aftercare. Decisions about your care rest with the clinician treating you.

We only collect what we need to connect you with care, and we don't sell your information. We ask that detailed medical information stays with your clinician rather than our web forms. See our privacy policy for full details.
