How to get a prosthetic toe

The step-by-step path from first thought to finished fitting, and what happens at each stage.

If you have decided a custom silicone toe might be right for you, the path from here is straightforward. Here is how it works, step by step.

Step 1: let the foot heal

A prosthesis is fitted to a healed, stable residual toe. After an amputation, swelling takes time to settle and the shape of the residual toe changes as it does. Most clinicians want to see full healing before taking an impression, typically a few months after surgery. If you had a diabetes-related amputation, your medical team's confirmation that the skin is sound matters even more; see our guide to prostheses after a diabetes-related amputation.

Step 2: find a registered clinician

BioDigit devices are fitted by registered health professionals, podiatrists, prosthetists, occupational therapists and similar, who have completed our product training. Use the clinician finder to register your interest and be connected with a clinician near you.

Step 3: assessment and honest advice

The first appointment is a conversation. The clinician examines your foot, listens to what you want, and tells you honestly what a prosthesis can and cannot do for your situation, including how it will look, how it attaches and how it behaves in shoes. You should leave this appointment with a clear price and no pressure.

Step 4: impression and colour match

The clinician takes a precise impression of your residual toe and the surrounding foot, measures the matching toe on the other foot, and carries out a colour match in neutral light, capturing skin tone, undertones, joint shading and nail colour. These records are what the prosthesis is built from.

Step 5: manufacture and quality check

Your toe is individually sculpted and cast in medical-grade silicone, finished with nail detail and surface texture, and checked against BioDigit's quality standard before it ships to the clinic.

Step 6: fitting and aftercare

Your clinician fits the device in person, checks the fit, colour and comfort against the standard, and shows you how to put it on, take it off and care for it. They remain your point of contact afterwards, and the device is backed by a clear delivery and remake policy. For day-to-day care, see the toe prosthesis care guide.
